SUMMARY:Peace Pilgrimage from Malvern to Telford
DESCRIPTION:The SDSC Arms Fair is taking place in Telford in November. In witness against this event there will be a pilgrimage for Peace\, beginning in Malvern where this arms fair was previously sited. \nInformation from the organisers: \nWe’re looking for walking pilgrims\, we welcome those walking multiple days or just a single day. We’re also looking for help and assistance on route. \nPilgrims walking multiple days will need simple accommodation and food. We will need support drivers to move overnight bags from stop to stop\, and to help transport tired walkers. We will need local people to help us promote this event. \nAnd we we’re looking for local knowledge of sites of suffering on our route. \nWe want to walk with people of all faiths and none\, people of different political persuasions\, people who see themselves as pacifists and people who don’t\, people of all different genders\, races\, abilities… All we ask is that you join us in a spirit of openness\, respect\, care and curiosity. \nFor full details of the itinerary and how to contact the organisers\, go here.

SUMMARY:Women In Black International Online Conference
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday 31st August\, the Women In Black International Online Conference opened it’s metaphorical doors to a rich program of informative and thought provoking events. These next couple of weeks promise to follow suit. \nHere are just some of the upcoming events; \nDAY 4: FRIDAY 6 TH SEPTEMBER \nSession 10 Open Space \nLepa Mladjenovic will facilitate this workshop to enable WiB groups to share updates about what they are doing. \n(Spanish and Italian interpretation) \nLondon time 12-1.30pm \nSession 11 Militarism robs resources from social policy – Case Study (Finland) lead by speaker Leena Erasaari. \nLondon time 2-3.30 pm \nSession 12: International Lesbian Solidarity in Action \nHeena (WiB Brighton\, UK) will facilitate this session with Kakuma refugees\, Mary-Audry\, Shamsa\, and WiBs from different countries\, to look forward and discuss further ways to strengthen our movement with practical and political solidarity. \nLondon time 4-5.30 pm \nDAY 5: SATURDAY 7th SEPTEMBER \nSession 13: International Courts of Women Against Wars\, For Peace. \nFacilitated by Sue Finch\, with Speaker Corinne Kumar\, from WiB Bangalore and Vimochana\, on how the International Courts of Women have developed and continued\, sharing insights about the importance of Renouncing Retribution for Reparative Justice – one stream in a global confluence \nLondon time 12-1.30pm \nSession 14: WiB activism to stop the war on Gaza \nFacilitated by Miri Weingarten \nAs well as facilitating this discussion on working together to stop the war on Gaza\, Miri will speak about why she initiated a new Women in Black vigil on Saturdays in London Euston\, as a response to the events on and since 7 October 2023. \nMiri will provide information on dissident groups that are currently active within Israeli society as well as Jewish activism against the war in many countries\, including the UK where she now lives. This session aims to open the discussion to participants from different places and perspectives and seek ways to work collectively to stop this war. \nLondon time 2-3.30 pm \nSession 15: Is Western pacifism colonialist? Facilitated by Eva Aneiros and Madrid Mujeres de Negro \nOur pacifism is crossed by the rest of our life circumstances\, also by our privileges. We would like to propose a debate on several questions that will allow us to analyse our way of being in pacifism\, each one from where she is\, in order to be able to build bridges with women in other situations and with other experiences in conditions of equality and mutual respect. To this end\, we want to generate a debate around the following questions: Is pacifism different in war zones than in situations of peace? \nFrom where do we make criticisms of wars? \nCan we think of examples of pacifist colonialism (or colonialist pacifism)? \nWhat defence strategies can we propose? \nLondon time: 4 – 5.30pm \nDAY 6: SUNDAY 8TH SEPTEMBER: \nSession 16: WiB Website \nIntroduced by Sian Jones with information and questions for WiBs from around the world. \nIn 2013\, Cynthia Cockburn started work with Ana Valdés\, Nadia Farou and other women to produce an amazing website\, which brings together Women in Black from Alaska to Australia. Now\, the website needs revitalising for new times. The current site isn’t nimble enough to keep up with ongoing events; it needs to be interactive and accessible to more women; it needs new energy and creativity to reflect who we are; new contributors\, new administrators …. and new funding. This workshop will gather your ideas\, suggestions and thoughts about the website and the way forward. So before we meet\, please have a good look round it. Here are some thoughts we want to explore\, you may have other ideas\, so bring them along. \nLondon time 12-1.30pm \nSession 17 Colombia – Women’s role in the peace process and the Women in Black conference in Colombia 2025 \nSpeakers Marina Gallego\, WiB/Ruta Pacifica National Coordinator\, and Clara Mazo. \nAn introduction to Ruta Pacifica in Colombia and its process of influencing peace\, both in the different negotiations in the country\, as well as the strategic actions carried out. I will present the strategy used by Ruta Pacifica to reach the negotiation table between the government and FARC\, which achieved the inclusion of women’s rights in the peace agenda\, recorded in the Final Peace Agreement. Our influence on the peace agreement and achievements for women and the country. \nLondon time: 2-3.30 pm \nCLOSING PLENARY: Women moving forward together for peace and justice – Facilitators Rebecca and Sue\, with Liz\, Sue and other WiB participants \nLondon time: 3.30 – 5.00 pm \nFor more information\, please visit the Women In Black website

SUMMARY:Weaving the Web/inars: Greenham 40th: Western Shoshone Speak Out Against Nuclear Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\nNuclear Weapon ‘Test’ on Shoshone Land 1951 \nFrom 1958 to 1992\, the UK conducted 24 underground tests at the US Nevada Test Site\, on the ancestral lands belonging to the Western Shoshone people.  This Web/inar is coordinated by Juley Howard and explores the impacts of nuclear colonialism with Ian Zabarte\, who stands alongside Chief Raymond Yowell (ret’d) as Principal Man of the Western Bands of the Shoshone Nation of Indians in their continuing struggle for true sovereignty and justice.   \nMap of Newe Segobia\, as recognised by the 1863 Treaty of Ruby Valley \nOn 14 November 1990\, four activists\, including three Greenham Women who were also part of the Aldermaston Women’s Peace Camp(aign)\, halted a British nuclear test for new warheads for the Trident nuclear weapons system.  Jane Gregory\, Juley Howard\, Lorna Richardson and Michael Terry from local American Peace Test group had been given permission by the Elders of the Western Shoshone Nation to walk on their sacred ancestral lands to stop nuclear testing.  Following their arrest and subsequent trial in Las Vegas\, the Greenham and Aldermaston Women returned to Britain and organised meetings for Western Shoshone women to speak directly about British-American nuclear colonialism\, environmental contamination and violation of their land\, rights and sovereignty.  In July 1993\, 13 Greenham/Aldermaston Women were arrested for gate-crashing a Buckingham Palace Garden Party with visual materials that highlighted British nuclear testing and abuses against Western Shoshone rights and lands.  When the women stood trial in Bow Street Court\, they were supported by Western Shoshone Elder William Rosse Sr.\, who travelled to London and gave powerful testimony on this issue.   \nIan Zabarte (our main speaker) is a long-term political activist by necessity of being a member of the Western Shoshone Nation.  From Duckwater in Northern Nevada Ian has spent decades working with Western Shoshone elders to preserve the Western Shoshone territory – Newe Segobia.  Through organisations such as the Native Community Action Council\, the heart of Ian’s work is to maintain the Western Shoshones’ Treaty Rights from the agreement made with the US government at Ruby Valley in 1863.  This work encompasses fulfilling the treaty agreements\, environmental and social justice demands of the Shoshone Nation\, as well as their rights to conserve and use the land to support the traditional Shoshone lifestyle and to protect Western Shoshone cultural heritage.  \nIan has carried on the struggle to stop nuclear waste dumping at Yucca Mountain in the heart of Newe Segobia. He was part of the campaign to successfully end nuclear bomb tests in North America\, above and below ground.  Today he stands alongside Chief Raymond Yowell (ret’d) as Principal Man of the Western Bands of the Shoshone Nation of Indians in the fight for true sovereignty and justice.  \nIan Zabarte  \nThis Webinar is coordinated and facilitated by Juley Howard\, Greenham Common campaigner\, who took part in actions to stop the UK’s penultimate nuclear bomb explosion in 1990\, along with Greenham/Aldermaston campaigners Lorna Richardson and Jane Gregory\, Michael Terry from the American Peace Test action group\, plus Rebecca Johnson\, whose post-Greenham work with Greenpeace enabled this and other nonviolent activism at many nuclear test sites\, which contributed to the 1996 Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). \n  \nExplore the  Repository at University Nevada Reno relating to the lives of the Dann sisters and the Western Shoshone Defense Project dedicated to maintaining the Shoshone tradition of respect for and life in harmony with Mother Earth.  \nYucca Mountain on Shoshone land\, Nevada
