On Aug 26th 1981, 36 people started their 110 mile walk from Cardiff to RAF Greenham Common in protest against the Americans holding Cruise missiles on common land. Over the next 19 years Greenham Common became home to thousands of women who believed they could create change and leave the world a better place.

We’re inviting young people to join us throughout autumn 2023 to help us explore the legacy of the Greenham Common Peace Camp and the impact it’s had on your community. Are there Greenham Women living in your local area? What does your community remember about Greenham Common? What causes are important to you community today and what can you learn from Greenham to help you make a difference?

You’ll find resources, lesson plans and archive material to help you get start looking for your own Greenham common connections on our Impact Tree. Explore some of our key themes to help you get started including:

  • Actions Large and Small
  • Camp Life

Groups are invited to consider what causes are important to them and write their own manifesto setting their own aims for the future.

All groups who participate before the 12th February 2024 will be included in our online Impact Tree and archive as we track the impact of the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camps 40 years on where you can share your interviews, research, creative outcomes and manifestos.

We’re here to help your young people every step of the way. Once you’ve registered we’ll provide you with:

  • A set of Support Notes with lots of background information and links to help you shape your project
  • We’ll be running several online support sessions to tell you more about the project and introduce you to some of the key themes
  • Online videos, resources and workshops to help you explore the impact of Greenham in your local area
  • In person workshops subject to application

An Introduction to Greenham

Camp Life

The Greenham Common Peace Camp was the largest women’s led movement since suffrage. The camp lasted for 19 years through harsh winters and tough conditions. Sometimes the space was held by a few women, at other times thousands would turn up for large actions. Find out more about what day to day life at the camp was like here.
