Through 2024, evidence has been mounting that US nuclear weapons will return to UK soil. And just as happened in the 1980s at Greenham, ordinary people are saying no. Here’s an overview of what’s happening, including how YOU can get involved.
In January, the BBC reported that ‘plans to deploy American nuclear weapons to an airbase in Suffolk have progressed’… ‘in preparation for the base’s “upcoming nuclear mission”. F-35A Lightning II combat aircraft, which can carry nuclear bombs, have been deployed from Lakenheath.
CND have reported on this too, reminding us that when nukes were stored at Lakenheath until 2008, ‘at least two major accidents’ occured.
The Lakenheath Alliance for Peace, of which we are a member, took shape and started actions in 2024. Watch this brilliant video about their Walk from Norwich and subsequent Peace Camp in July 2024 and then get involved.
Keep an eye on their website (and ours – we always promote their events) for upcoming events. There are Monthly Vigils and the next big event will be a Peace Camp from the 14th to 25th April and the Lakenheath Alliance for Peace (LAP) Big Blockade at 12 noon on the 26th April. Be there, take part, on your own, with friends, as an affinity group. Be creative, do actions, street theatre, singing, or more spicy things….or just sit on a comfy settee. Get prepared beforehand.
