Clare thinks she was probably 16 when she went to Greenham on her own in school half term. She had been a couple of times before with her mum, sister and some schoolfriends on a day trip. At Greenham, she developed her lifelong tea addiction and became determined to be vegan when she left home. She learned how to sing songs, weave spiderwebs into as well as cut the wire fences. She says she learned how to be her brave self, how to laugh at policemen and the law and the state. At Greenham, she says she found somewhere she could be comfortable with being herself – attracted to women, passionate about peace and justice, not like anyone else. “We were all of these things, and we were beautiful.”

Clare was interviewed by Faye Wilson in December 2021.
