Laila has had a whole life in activism. Originally from a conservative town on the east coast, she says she was “born with” socialist ideas. She met her husband while training at a nursing school, and they endured prejudice as an interracial couple. Together they joined many movements for justice and peace, including the CND and Anti-Nazi League. After joining the Watford Women’s Peace Group, she made her first visit to Greenham for Embrace the Base in her 30s. She took her daughter who was then seven years old. At the time of interview, she was 76 and, as she says, “still a raging activist”.
Laila was interviewed by Jill ‘Ray’ Raymond in February 2022.
